Koonthal (Squid) varattiyathu




500 gm Squid (cleaned and cut into thin strips or rings)

1 tbsp Vegetable oil

1 tbsp Turmeric powder

1 tbsp Coriander powder

2 tsp Red Chilli powder

2 tsp Garam Masala powder

2 tbsp Water

2 tbsp Ginger Garlic paste
(for this recipe, you could also substitute the paste with 1 tbsp Ginger powder and 1 tbsp Garlic powder)

Salt to taste



  1. Heat oil in a pan and add all the masala powder to it in the sequence provided in the ingredients listing
  2. Cook on low heat for 2-3 minutes and water to this
  3. Cook for another 2 minutes
  4. Add the ginger garlic paste and fry well until golden
  5. Mix in the squid pieces to this with salt to taste and cover and cook for 7-8 minutes or until the squid is cooked

Serve hot with rice, rotis or porotta
